A workshop of a new play by Marty Strenczewilk entitled “Identification, Please” will take place August 21st-27th at the American Indian Community House. Directed by Mainspring Collective’s Hilary Krishnan, the workshop features the talents of Jesse Bernath, Holland Hamilton, Jimmy Juste, Khris Lewin, Hannah Ryan Smith, Marty Strenczewilk, and Jenna Weinberg. The production team includes Sarah Martin (Production Designer), EunJin Cho (Sound Designer), Anne Seiwerath (Dramaturg), and Gary Slootskiy (Creative Assistant). The week-long workshop is sponsored in part by At Hand Theatre’s Staged Reading Series.
At Hand’s co-founder, Marty Strenczewilk, is working with collaborators to develop a full-length piece that incorporates live action and video to tell a story based on his experiences as a young man of American Indian descent growing up in rural New York State. “Identification, Please” will explore issues of identity in contemporary America and illuminate how each of us selectively draws from our heritage, culture, and experiences to create the identity that we choose–and how that process of individuation ultimately unites us.
In an effort to compile real life data, Marty and his collaborators have created an online survey about how people self-identify. Please click on the link below and fill out the short survey (5 minutes) as honestly as you can. It’s completely anonymous, and it will greatly assist the process. Please only do the survey once, so the results are as accurate as possible, and feel free to pass this along to anyone you know!
