Looking for West African/Modern Dancers

DANCEĀ AUDITION NOTICE

Friday, Feb. 13th, 2009; 12:30pm – 1:30 pm.

New Dance Group (305 W. 38th Street at 8th Avenue) – Studio #4

Please arrive early to fill out our audition form and meet choreographer Sarita Louise Moore.

At Hand Theatre Company is seeking African-American male/female dancers, aged 18-45, for an original play, “Trickster at the Gate,” performing March 13-29, Fri-Sun at 8pm, in midtown Manhattan. Rehearsals will be March 1-12. Looking for dancers with some dance/technique training in one or more of these dance forms: West African, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Carribbean, Haitian Folklore, Modern, and/or Jazz TRICKSTER AT THE GATE is a new drama by up and coming playwright, John Patrick Bray. The play tells the story of an African God who has been sentenced to live the life of a mortal African-American woman throughout the 20th Century. Inspired by the life and works of Zora Neal Hurston and infusing the tradition of live African dance and drumming, Trickster at the Gate tells a story of faith, acceptance and love.

This bold and mutli-disciplinary new play ushers in a new beginning for At Hand Theatre as they set forth to uphold greener and more sustainable theatre practices. While incorporating minimal design elements, dance, and sound, At Hand Theatre intends to present work that is intensely rehearsed, visually emblematic, yet totally vivid. “Trickster is an excellent play for us to do with our new green mission,” says Artistic Director Daniel Horrigan, “It’s a play filled with oral history, stories and wonderful words. That combined with sound, dance and spare visual elements I’m really excited to create this rich landscape for the play and for our audience. To do that without building a set that will get tossed in three weeks is really wonderful.” If you have specific questions regarding the “Trickster at the Gate”, contact choreographer Sarita Louise Moore @ saritalou@bust.com or Managing Director, Justin Scribner @ justin@athandtheatre.com.
